It’s finally back to school for B.C’s kids….and time for a regular daily routine from waking up earlier to going to school to bedtime. Many kids are excited to get back into the swing of things, see their friends, old classmates, and teachers. But along with more routines comes less ‘free’ time and time PLAYing.
However, it is important for kids to remain active, even with school back in session. Regular daily physical activity will help kids concentrate better in school and improve their overall health.
Healthy Families BC says that, “children need to be active every day to promote their healthy growth and development. Kids who establish healthy lifestyle patterns at a young age will carry them – and their benefits – forward for the rest of their lives.” (1)
School gym classes are a great chance for kids to burn off some energy, break up the day of sitting in class, and be active! And gymnastics is a perfect activity for a fun gym class that also helps children with their physical literacy while they PLAY.
Gymnastics BC’s Kids CanMove program is a great resource for teachers to teach kids the fundamental movement skills that help with all sports. The program works on balance, jumps, landings, rotation activities and much more. It helps students become more flexible and build stronger muscles in a fun environment.
There are no winners or losers in this program as everyone participates at their own pace. The program also incorporates fun non-elimination games, disguises conditioning exercises, and encourages kids to use their imaginations.
The Kids CanMove program gives teachers a resource to feel more confident and comfortable delivering gymnastics in gym time. The resource contains ready to use lesson plans, and task cards with images that clearly demonstrate how to perform different skills.
Gymnastics BC also has trained instructors across the province who deliver this program to teachers and students. All Kids CanMove instructors are also certified gymnastics coaches who coach at GymBC member clubs. And a trip to a GymBC club is a great way to cap off your gymnastics session. Your students will be able to use the fundamental movement skills they learned in school gym time and apply it to the fun equipment in the gymnastics club!
