Have you ever noticed how some kids just seem to have a natural ability navigating through playgrounds? With no fear and a strong sense of confidence? Swinging across the monkey bars effortlessly, chasing their friends while jumping over and climbing under obstacles, or jumping without hesitation from log to log.
Even falling now and then, but getting right back up with no problem. It is very likely that these kids have taken part in a gymnastics class at some point in their lives!
Gymnastics classes teach the fundamental movements skills such as swinging, landing safely, jumping, running, and dodging that make these kids confident in the playground. A confident child has an easier time developing new friendships, developing social skills, and learning to cooperate with others, all valuable skills that can be developed in the PLAYground!
As the Canadian Paediatric Society puts it “local playgrounds offer opportunities to climb, slide, jump, run and socialize with other children, and to play creatively.”(1)
Gymnastics classes also provide a great environment for children who may not yet feel that comfortable in the PLAYground setting to develop these skills. After even just a few gymnastics classes, you will notice your child trying new things in the PLAYground, maybe even something that they were very fearful of before.
Aside from the physical benefits, gymnastics classes are also a great ‘social classroom’ for kids. “Attending a regular gymnastics class provides young children with the opportunity to communicate with people their own age, work within a team, and engage with adults.” (2)
The Gymnastics Academy of Boston also believes that “gymnastics gives children an opportunity to learn about social skills like listening, following directions, taking turns, being quiet, and respecting others. Children also have fun, meet new friends, and learn independence.” (3)
These are all important skills that will be transferred over to the outdoor setting as well.
If you have ever thought twice about enrolling your child in gymnastics, now is your chance! PLAY gymnastics BC clubs throughout the province offer programming that will also make your child shine in the PLAYground!
Check out your local PLAY Gymnastics BC club for more on how your child can learn while PLAYing and having fun.
